You may be right but

the NFL is effectively one company with multiple TV deals and competitive sideboards (salary caps, roster limits, drafts, etc.) So the networks kind of know what they are getting for their investment and there is some parity in the ratings across the networks.

I think the NFL model would be good for college football but I don't think we'll see a departure from the haves and have nots that we see now, regardless of how many conferences there are. Capitalism is fine, but it may not be as much fun to watch.
